Coming home to London, to family and friends, after over a year away felt incredible. Staying with my parents, I found ourselves quickly slipping back into old routines. My dad would spend his days watching the football (soccer for my American friends), while my mum spent time with her prayers, on the phone with friends, and hunting down the next bargain. I felt an overwhelming sense of comfort and nostalgia with the unchanged normality of it all.
While in London, I spent an afternoon wandering through the familiar streets of Bloomsbury. I reminisced over my years passed in the area as a PhD student and felt compelled to document the unassuming buildings lining the streets. Later that day, one of my oldest friends gave me a gorgeous bouquet of deep red parrot tulips – the very flowers you see in this piece. This painting is a creation of nostalgia and comfort, the feelings that I get from coming home.
Created with a combination of brushwork, application with a palette knife, and acrylic paint pens, this original artwork has been finished with a satin varnish for protection. The painting comes ready-to-hang with painted canvas edges and picture wire installed. The piece is titled, signed and dated on the back.
Please note, this painting will be on view at Austin City Hall through May 2026 as part of the People’s Gallery.
