Paintings Inspired by the Architecture of Austin and Texas Wildflowers

In this collection, titled ‘Local Imprints‘, I capture iconic buildings and views in Austin that evoke memories of London, the city where I grew up. These paintings bridge the gap between my new home and my old, illustrating how distant places can share surprising similarities. This series reflects my personal journey of embracing Austin’s vibrant life. I incorporate vibrant Texas wildflowers into each scene—symbols of resilience and renewal that flourish across the city every spring. My aim is for these works is to ignite curiosity and wonder, encouraging viewers to contemplate the connections between place and the stories that unfold within these shared spaces.

I created this body of work during my very first artist residency with the Downtown Austin Space Activation and Tribeza. These weeks in January and February 2025 were about exploring the essence of Austin, the idea of home and belonging in my creative practice. Until this point, I’d focused on places from my personal history. With this collection, I was looking at my present.

During this residency, I found myself daily in awe of Austin’s unique skyline, yet often catching glimpses of London in the curve of a dome or the stretch of a bridge. It was like having a chat with an old friend in a brand-new place. I share more about this journey as my project develops through my blog posts, where I opened up about the challenges and joys of translating these new impressions onto canvas.
